All first and
second year candidates and those new to the program and their parents
are asked to attend the orientation meeting in September in the St.
Mary’s School cafeteria. The Horizons program will be introduced and
explained, the calendar will be presented and the service and faith
based requirements will also be explained. It is very important that you
plan to attend this meeting. All candidates are to attend with their
parents.
Please check the
bulletin weekly for changes or updates. The bulletin is the main source
of communication.
Once again, we welcome our young people to a new year of growth in the
Catholic faith. If you have any questions, or if you are interested in
becoming a Horizons Catechist, please give us a call
at 973-627- 8276.

ATTENDANCE POLICY
Classes missed
beyond the allowed absences for core courses will have to be made up by
retaking the core or other mutually agreed upon method. The attendance
requirement for the core classes is 4 out of 5, and the candidate must
attend all 3 mini sessions, a missed mini session will make the entire
mini null and void. There will NOT be optional core or mini course
sessions offered.
Candidates must
fulfill the following requirements:
Four Core Courses
(5 weeks)
(assigned)
"The Church: Its
Wisdom, Works and Worship"
"The Bible: Power
and Promise"
"Jesus: The Man
and His Message"
"Called to Live
the Gospel"
Each course is 5
sessions each, on Sunday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00. One miss is
allowed. Young people attending Catholic school do NOT have to attend
the core courses, since Church doctrine, Christology, Bible and Morality
is included in their school religion curriculum.
Four Mini Courses
(3 Weeks) (elective)
Mini courses are
offered and chosen by the candidates. The list of offered mini courses
will be forthcoming. Sessions are held on Sunday evenings from 7:00 to
9:00. All three sessions within the course must be taken. Young people
attending Catholic school MUST sign up for and attend the mini course
sessions.
In addition to
the Core and Mini courses each candidate will attend an opening retreat
their first year, a closing retreat at the end of yr 2, complete 25
hours of community service and acquire 12 faith based points.
If the candidate
has not fulfilled the requirements of the program, the candidate may
return for a third year. There is no age ‘window’ for confirmation.
While most young people enjoy receiving the sacrament with their peers,
if this is not possible, more than two years may be taken to complete
the program.
