RIGHT TO LIFE

St. Mary’s Pro-Life Committee seeks to inform parishioners about issues and legislation relating to life and death issues. There is a phone chain for people interested in calling state and federal legislators about important bills or issues. Calls are in response to alerts issued by the Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities from the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, or the New Jersey Catholic Conference, received through the diocesan Pro-Life office.

Anyone interested in being added to the phone chain, please contact Margaret O'Neill or Jim Rizos.

Other Pro-Life activities in the parish include:

  1. The annual March for Life in Washington on January 22 each year, with a bus provided by the Knights of Columbus. (If January 22 is a weekend, the March is held on Monday or Friday to enable marchers to visit congressional offices after the March.)
  2. Respect Life Sunday, the first Sunday of October.
  3. In conjunction with the Parish's Horizon Program, we are offering a "True Love Waits" course (which teaches the students about abortion, pornography, and encourages youth to lead a chaste life until marriage) for Confirmation candidates .
  4. Books, videos, and pamphlets on pro-life issues in the parish library and in the magazine rack in the Narthex
  5. Bulletin announcements of events and activities related to life issues such as:
  • Life Chain, a peaceful witness of the sanctity of human life, held along a main road the afternoon of the first Sunday of October.
  • Right to Life raffle ticket sales, to help support the educational activities of New Jersey Right to Life

For more information on Catholic programs related to Right to Life, you can look to the Priests for Life web site.

Our legislators need to know our views on the sanctity of human life as well as other issues. For your convenience, the federal and state legislators for our area are listed below, as well as web sites for further information.

Priests for Life is a national ministry, recognized under Canon Law, which assists the clergy and laity of parishes across the country to carry out the pro-life dimensions of their ministry. Some 130 dioceses distribute our newsletter to their priests, and tens of thousands  of priests have benefited from our seminars, homily helps, and visits to
their parishes.  The Priests for Life web site may be found at:
www.priestsforlife.org.

There is a section that contains bulletin inserts, General Intercessions for Mass, suggested activities for parishes, and material for teachers, students and youth groups. Specially expanded sections include the writings and talks of the Holy Father and bishops worldwide on the theme of life, and a wide range of post-abortion testimonies. Audio segments, including entire retreats, as well as video clips are also included.
